Before being processed into the oxidation reactor, p-Xylene is treated with an acetic acid solvent and a catalyst solution. Within the reactor, p-Xylene is oxidised to form terephthalic acid, but most of the product is precipitated. This crude terephthalic acid is then sent for purification.
