ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico: New Mexico district attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies has said that actor Alec Baldwin and up to four others may face charges in October following the 2021 fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during the filming of the film "Rust."
The final police report on the shooting near Santa Fe, New Mexico is expected to be issued next month, and prosecutors will file criminal charges if warranted, Carmack-Altwies told the state's finance board.
In a letter to the board, she said that investigators are focusing on the "many individuals" who handled the pistol Baldwin fired during a rehearsal, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.
"One of the possible defendants is well-known movie actor Alec Baldwin," she added.
Baldwin has denied responsibility for Hutchins' death, stressing that live rounds should never have been allowed on the movie set.
Luke Nikas, Baldwin's attorney, warned against assumptions that the actor would be charged.
In a statement, Nikas said, "The DA has made clear that she has not received the sheriff's report or made any decisions about who, if anyone, might be charged in this case."
