IRVINE, California: California police said that a pit bull puppy that overdosed after possibly getting into its owners' fentanyl stash and was administered an overdose-reversing drug is now recovering.
The Irvine Police Department said that the dog's owners, a man and a woman, were arrested and could be charged with drug possession and animal cruelty.
Department spokesman Kyle Oldoerp told the Los Angeles Times over the weekend that the incident began on September 6 outside a Walmart, where officers discovered fentanyl in the suspects' car.
"Then the female said, 'Oh, I think my dog is overdosing.' She knew the symptoms because it was the second time the dog had overdosed," Oldoerp added.
Oldoerp further added, "If they are using drugs in their car, we can only speculate." He stressed that officers administered overdose-reversing naloxone to the puppy, which made a "pretty quick" recovery.
Authorities will keep the puppy until a hearing to determine whether to return it to its owners.
